Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

I don’t know about the rest but I really like the square buttons on her dress. Why didn’t she smile while taking the picture? She seems too miserable in these photos.

@Lia: Remi doesn’t look miserable to me at all. I think she is just very shy. And maybe a bit intense?

By the way, the people we photograph, often read the comments. That is one of the reasons why I always use the person’s name instead of he or she. When you phrase your comment, please also consider the feelings and view point of the people you are writing about, and the fact that on the request of JS—we are total strangers to them—they gave up some of their time and privacy in order to make it possible for you to see their fashion. ^ _ ^

About Remi: Her outfit is ok, but the boots are falling apart. I didn’t know that the style required broken boots! Other than that? Her hair shot is amazing, but in the full body shots, it makes her head look abnormally long/large. :/ Anyway, thanks for sharing!

@Kjeld: You are absolutely right about it, and I should’ve been more considerate. And, yes, it must be due to shyness that she isn’t smiling. Anyway, I’ll just say it again bcz they did strike me as quite pretty – I love those buttons, and I wish I had any piece of clothing with square buttons on it. Lucky her for having one.

P.S. Speaking of her boots…the first time I saw them, I didn’t pay much attention to the fact they are worn out bcz I was so surprised to see a boot version of the Oxford flats. They’re the first ones I’ve seen.

@Lia: Thanks for your understanding!

@Lia & Ed: I have seen lots of worn out shoes and boots recently. I think that you will see more of them over the next few months.

I remember people being shocked when they saw jeans with holes. They are now sold that way… These days, it’s not even young people that are the only ones wearing them; yesterday I met a usually conservatively dressed woman in her late 40s wearing jeans with holes.

It’s going to be interesting to see if footwear takes the same route.

Wow, she looks so TALL! The tiny print complements her frame, and the red/purple stripes make the brown accessories pop nicely. I’m a huge fan of black and brown, so I’m pretty excited to see Remi pulling it of so lovely. Polished, but still with a unique style.

@nonsibi: ^ _ ^

@petitesam: True. I love how much attention Remi put into her accessories. The hair, the bag, the belt, the shoes. They match each other perfectly and complement the dress. It is so well done, and looks so perfectly natural, that you don’t notice how well done it is unless you pay extra attention. As always, the best efforts look effortless.

Her name is SO COOL! I like it even more than I like her outfit =)

@Etsune: I like the name a lot, too. It reminded me of the character in an anime (Remi, Nobody’s Girl).
