Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

A very pretty ethereal look and I find her manicure captivating for some reason. Also Kjeld, I like how the long shot has almost an eerie feel to it – all that space and signs of recent activity but it looks like everyone vanished suddenly and only the Mori Girl remained…

@2046: Thanks. I love your description. I actually considered shooting Chizuru from the opposite direction. There would have been an empty wall behind her and no backlight. But I felt that the strong backlight and the vanishing details added something extra, something mysterious, to the image. Sort of an Alice in Wonderland feel with the romantically clad Chizuru popping up in this surreal world of asphalt and concrete. I am really glad that you like it.

Not a fan of Mori Girls, but she looks lovely. I really like her boots.

I love the Mori Girls.. I can never figure out just how many layers they have on. For instance, her skirt overlay is similar to her ‘apron,’ but then she has the brown long skirt underneath, and this added texture at her waist (visible in first shot). The light colours make the girls look like they could float away in the wind… but she’s got her boots on ;D

Amazing. Its almost like lolita style Mori girl in a way..Or maybe its just the hat. She is creative and unique still. Amazing shot, and GREAT observation @2046. Sooo cool.

@all: Thanks! I think Chizuru will be happy, too. She was very shy about being photographed and initially said no. But after showing her JS and the photos we shoot she changed her mind. Reading these great comments will make her enormously happy, I am sure.

@petitesam: I didn’t shoot it well enough to show how it is all connected. Chizuru was very shy so I was very careful when I photographed her. I can’t quite recall if the dark brown skirt that you can see was connected to the apron, but the rest (except for the t-shirt) is all connected in one way or another. The apron looks like many separate items, while it is really only one, albeit made of individual pieces.

I really love these shots.

so strange yet so enticing. she looks like a forest guardian/hippie. i usually like dark looks but this is so cool. it all just goes together so well.

@Lyndranette: I love how you describe Chizuru as a forest guardian! Although you might have meant it in a literal sense, it immediately made me think of fairies. ^ _ ^

I love her cellphone-straps, they are adorable. I don’t know if it’s only me that have noticed it, but the length of the blouse’s sleeves are different, aren’t they? I think it looks really unique ^^ I love her brown boots, really make her look like she walks around in the forest dirt. Heh.
It’s great that we can get to see the shy and stylish people too. It’s funny that someone that walks around in an eye-catching style like that, is such a shy person. Even though I remember I have read about mori girls being shy, they are still brave enough to stand out ^^

@Keekii: Yes, the blouse’s sleeves are different. Great observation!

I guess that people always automatically assume that if you dress in a certain way it means that you want attention. As you know, that is often not the case. And then, I know from experience, there are also shy people who use their clothes to compensate for their shyness. I used to be quite shy myself, and I think I may have compensated as well way back when…
