One of the most respected design schools in Japan

Established in 1963, Tokyo Designer Gakuin College offers an incredible range of design courses from fashion design all the way to animation.

Tokyo Designer Gakuin’s Fashion Design courses teach fashion history, materials, business acumen, technology and skills from drawing to pattern making to sewing. The school aims to promote talent with links to other creative fields like music, the arts, and so on.

Many Tokyo Designer Gakuin students participate in Tokyo’s popupar Design Festa The school also organizes no less than 6 fashion shows every year.

Tokyo Designer Gakuin was the first school in Japan to introduce animation to its curriculum (1965). About 200 students, including some from China, Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand, are enrolled in the school’s two-year anime course.

Sorry for the late response, I have been traveling and am now in Tokyo for the Japan Fashion Week. Because of my hectic schedule, I don’t have time to search the site of Tokyo Designer Gakuin for an e-mail address. As it happens, English e-mails are usually ignored anyway.

I suggest that you send a letter or download Skype (free). International phone calls by Skype cost just a few dollars, even if you speak for an hour or so.

@Anastasia: The Stylist Course is part of the Tokyo Designer Gakuin’s Fashion Department, so this course is about fashion styling in the usual sense of the term.

@Angela: Tokyo Designer Gakuin’s Make Up Artist course takes two years. It is taught in Japanese, so you will need to master the language. See the page with more information on the Make Up Artist course.

There is some English on the site, but it doesn’t give much detailed information (the same is true for Japanese, too, actually… But it does show the length of the courses). If you don’t yet read Japanese, I recommend Rikaichan, a popup dictionary add-on for Firefox.

Tokyo Designer Gakuin offers a free brochure, but again, you need Japanese.

@Angela: Have a look at the explanations on the site of Tokyo Designer Gakuin. On the bottom of the page, you will find 「学科のご紹介」. Below that links to explanations about the different courses. TDG courses are separated into stages, two stages per year. For additional questions, contact TDG directly or request their brochure. Please notice that the brochure is in Japanese, and needs to be requested in Japanese. The courses themselves are in Japanese, too.
