Constantly morphing brand with British tailoring roots

Taishi Nobukuni (信國太志) is a Central Saint Martin’s graduate and head designer for Japanese menswear label Takeo Kikuchi. He also has his own label Taishi Nobukuni and is known for his combination of ethnic influences and political collections.

Nobukuni was born in Kumamoto in 1970. In 1991, he went to live in the US, followed by France in 1994 where he worked as a trainee at John Galliano. He moved to the UK in 1995 and graduated from the Womenswear MA course at St. Martins in 1996.

In 2003, Nobukuni was appointed designer of Takeo Kikuchi. His brand Taishi Nobukuni debuted at the Tokyo Collections in 2005.

Nobukuni will do almost anything to get his message across, and even introduced several dogs, a baby sheep, and a falcon on the runway during his Autumn/Winter 2006 collection at Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo on March 24, 2006.

Nobukuni launched the environmentally-friendly line Botanika in 2007, temporarily abandoning his previous brand. He concentrated on the exclusive use of organic fabrics and natural dyes. The Taishi Nobukuni brand was re-launched in 2009, and also began integrating eco-friendly materials.
