Ornate and stunning high street couture

After graduating from Setsu Mode Seminar of Japanese designer and fashion illustrator Setsu Nagasawa (1917-1999), Hanai established Atelier Hanai in 1964. She opened her boutique Madam Hanai in Ginza, Tokyo in 1968.

The name of the company was changed to HANAI & Co.Ltd. in 1984. In the same year she opened her flag ship store in Tokyo’s trendy Aoyama district.

Hanai’s work has a level of sophistication paralleling that of her contemporary Hiroko Koshino. Her designs often feature gorgeous aspects velvet, flower motifs. Her high couture elegance is ornate and stunning.

Hanai’s work is not restricted to high street fashion. She has released a lot of licensed products, designs costumes for ballet performances and movies and she has studied traditional Japanese culture. She is actually a member o classical Japanese dance organization Touseika and a student of the Mushanokoji-urasenke school of tea ceremony.

Hanai has also served as a member of committees of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
